70% of the Earth's surface is ocean. 70%. The air we breathe, the food we eat and the weather we encounter are all directly affected by the ocean or stem from it in one way or another. Human civilisation itself has depended on the ocean from dot one.
With this being said, the ocean is said to have an even deeper and more complicated effect on the human body, one that transcends into an almost metaphysical plane. The book, Blue Mind, by Wallace J Nichols proposes the concept that the ocean behaves as a source of happiness, health and even stress relief for people in and around it. This is backed up by solid scientific evidence which has showcased increased happiness and improved mental health as well as decreased blood pressure.
Personally, I think that the very idea that a body of water can have a concrete and tangible physical effect on the human body and mind is completely bizarre and quite simply extraordinary. What's more is it leaves one to wonder what other seemingly extraneous entities, objects and parts of our world are able to affect us in the same way.
